This one day workshop is intended for new investigators, including postdocs and junior faculty, who are in the early stages of running their own labs/research programs.  Early career scientists are faced with a range of new responsibilities, including getting grant support, publishing, hiring staff and running their labs; however, most early stage scientists have not had formal business training.  Therefore, this workshop addresses some of the crucial issues faced by scientists early in their careers, including: 1) How to Plan a Successful Academic Career, including understanding the basics of academic positions, promotion, tenure, and the role of academic “citizenship”; 2) How to Lead a Lab identifying different leadership styles; understanding your role and responsibilities as the lab leader and how to build a team that will work together; 3) the Role of Mentoring, including your need for a mentor as well as your responsibilities as a mentor to postdocs and students and How to Develop a Budget for your Lab, etc.
