About the Postdoctoral Network
The Univeristy of Maryland, Baltimore(UMB) campus is comprised of several independant schools including, the School of Medicine, Dental School, Nursing School and School of Pharmacy. Each of these schools boasts a vibrant and internationally renown research enterprise. Post-Docs play a crital role in all of the research conducted.
The University of Maryland Dental School is the direct descendant of the world's first dental college, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery (BCDS), which was chartered by an act of the Maryland General Assembly in 1840. It employees roughly 40 postdoctoral fellow. Approximately 30 of which are in the Department of Biomedical Sciences . Postdoctoral Fellows in this department pursue advanced training and investigation grouped into one of three major areas of research specialization: Molecular and Cell Biology, Infectious Diseases and Immunology, and Neuroscience.
The University of Maryland School of Medicine currently has over 280 postdoctoral research fellows in its research ranks. Our School of Medicine is one of the country’s fastest growing research institutions, with total research awards of $350 million in FY05. Postdoctoral Research Fellows conduct basic science research and clinical research targeting worldwide health problems such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, vaccines, neurological diseases, heart disease, kidney disease, hypertension, trauma, complementary medicine and psychiatric problems.
- Ranked 5th among all 125 US medical schools in research grant expenditures per clinical faculty (AAMC 2003-2004).
- Ranked 25th among all 125 US medical schools in National Institutes of Health funding (FY2005).
The School of Pharmacy currently has 35 postdoctoral fellows. It was founded in 1841, is the fourth oldest school of pharmacy in the nation and the only pharmacy school in Maryland. The School of Pharmacy is comprised of three departments, Pharmacy Practice and Science, Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Pharmaceutical Health Services Research. Postdoctoral Research Fellows pursue research interests such as biopharmaceutics, drug delivery, pharmacoeconomics and regulatory issues.
Founded in 1889, the University of Maryland School of Nursing (SON) is one of the leading research institutions in the nation. Consistently ranked among the top 10 schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, the School enrolls over 1,400 students in its baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral programs. The School emphasizes the integration of research, teaching and clinical practice, and serves regional, national and international audiences.
Health Sciences and Human Services Library
The University of Maryland, Baltimore provides the campus with a world class Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HS/HSL), and is distinguished as the first library established by a medical school in the United States. The HS/HSL is part of the University of Maryland inter-library system equipped with on-line access and traditional service to informational resources.
