Research

Dr. Xu interested in the heart ischemia and infarction project, with the small animal (rats and mice) microsurgical model such as myocardial infarction, heart transplantation, mini-osmotic pump implantation for drug administration and medical imaging acquisition and analysis (MRI, ultrasound, ultrasound biomicroscope, 3D and 4D, color-Doppler ultrasound for animal and human)

Dr. Jianping Xu has established several animal model of cardiovascular disease, such as rodent heart transplantation, myocardial infarction, hypertension under sophisticated microsurgery techniques with his intensive research background both in clinic and basic studies.

Our recent research results indicated that cigarette smoking exposure to the recipients' results in severe allograft rejection and accerated graft loss via rat heart transplantation and smoking model.  These data provided new information that either donor alone or both the recipients and donors are equally critical for the survival of organ transplantation. Such adverse effects of cigarette smoke exposure will allow the development of ameliorating strategies to prolong allografts survival.

The rats were smoking with Research Tobacco Cigarettes via the rodent smoking machine

Research Techniques

1. Molecular laboratory skills: Polymerase chain reaction using sequence specific primers (PCR-SSP), Real-Time PCR, Genotyping technique, Free radical oxygen, lipid peroxide analysis, radioimmunoassay, Masson Trichrome Staining for heart histological examination. Genetic prenatal diagnosis of the isolation of fetal cell from the peripheral blood of the pregnant women.

2. Small animal diseases remodeling, microsurgery techniques: Rat and mice heart infarction modeling via surgical procedure by general anesthesia and treatment; Rat and mice heart transplantation surgery; Rat and mice mini-osmotic pump implantation surgery for hypertension remodeling; Rat and mice Langendorff heart perfusion; Rat and mice diabetes remodeling

3. Medical Imaging analysis: Rat and mice echocardiography; Rat and mice MRI imaging collection and analysis

4. 3D/4D clinical ultrasound
A. Static surface rendering reconstructing fetal surface structure image.
B. Static maximum value translucent rendering detecting fetal skeleton structure and formation.
C. Dynamic color and power Doppler rendering for maternal-fetal circulation reconstruction.
D. Birth defects evaluation and prenatal diagnosis.

5. Color Doppler ultrasound
A. Color Doppler ultrasound detecting uterine-placental circulation in normal and high risk pregnancy
B. Fetal umbilical cord nuchal entanglement, placental abnormalities, intrauterine growth restriction.

6. Ultrasound guidance clinical diagnosis and treatment of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Human chorionic villi sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, percutaneous umbilical blood Sampling (PUBs), biophysical profiles with fetal echocardiography, hysterosalpingography, ectopic pregnancy treatment by methotrexate.

7. Ultrasound of reproductive medicine: Endometrial thickness monitoring, follicular tracking, IVF-ET, multifetal pregnancy reduction and selective termination guided by ultrasound.
